Most women's skin type falls into one of six categories: dry; somewhat dry; normal; somewhat oily; oily; or combination. Skin type, which is determined by the amount of oil secretion, is hereditary. Environmental influences can tend to exacerbate conditions, but the different areas in the skin that produce oil and the amounts of oil produced are based on genetics.

Some women classify themselves as having sensitive skin. Although skin is remarkably robust, overexposure to the elements or overuse of products can lead to skin allergies or sensitivities. To avoid this, try to minimize the number of products you use and try to find ones designated for sensitive skin whenever possible.

Skin is remarkably resilient to damage and change, but it does become normalized to its environmental conditions. Therefore drastic changes often leave the skin lagging, requiring it to adjust to new conditions over time. For example, traveling to a dry climate or the sudden cold and windy conditions of winter often result in itchy, dry skin. As a result, the skin responds by increasing oil production to compensate for the weather's drying effects. Similarly, if you change the products you use in your skin care routine, your skin may have a reaction.

Even today, all the interrelated biological systems supporting the skin aren't completely understood, nor are the causes and effects of stress on the body. However, the simple fact is that stress interferes with the body's systems that repair and regulate the skin. For example, a loss in the skin's natural antioxidant defenses due to stress can lead to accelerated ageing. Also, hormones associated with stress can trigger a histamine release within the skin, causing it to erupt in tiny red bumps or, in some cases, hives.

No, unfortunately. Not only do products affect individuals differently, but no product can provide the reversible effects of age and sun exposure. Generally, the fewer products you use on your skin and the more you stay out of the sun, the better your skin will look later. Skin care products such as sunscreen, moisturizers and those with antioxidant properties can be beneficial for rehydrating and helping minimize the effect of ageing.

Cleansing is essential for your skin's long term health. It clears away dirt and bacteria, keeps pore ducts open and exfoliates surface skin cells. However, cleansing does change your skin's balance with the environment by stripping its protective oils that act as natural barriers to the elements. Additionally, overuse of skin care products may bring about 'sensitive skin' or cause skin to break out from time to time. To avoid this, use a gentle cleanser twice a day.

Yes, morning and night. (But no more than that, even if you have oily skin, or you'll strip it of the sebum that helps keep it soft.) Use warm or cool water, and wash with your hands -- don't use anything scratchy like abrasive washcloths or sponges, which can cause micro-tears in the skin (where bacteria can breed).  Remember to rinse well, especially around the hairline and jawline, to prevent residue and reduce breakouts. Finally, never go to bed without cleansing. Letting makeup stew on your face all night long can lead to irritation.

Probably less than you think. In general, people tend to over-moisturize. All you need for your entire face is about a nickel-size dollop. And don't forget your earlobes! Even people with great skin often have wrinkled and sun-damaged ears because they don't keep them protected from harmful rays.

Gently! Simply use a dab smaller than a pea for both eyes, and massage underneath the eye area. Avoid excess cream, which can lead to clogged oil glands called milia (those bumpy white dots around the eyes).

Exfoliating skin helps slough off dead surface cells, letting new skin emerge. Start with once or twice a week and see how skin responds. Don't scrub too hard -- if you turn red, you're being too aggressive. If you have back acne, don't scour it and risk making it worse.  Surprisingly, the conditioner you use on your hair may be to blame for your breakouts. Often it just gets quickly rinsed at the end of a shower, leaving pore-clogging residue behind. After conditioning, tie up your hair and wash your back.

Think of it as prevention. If you do it daily (yes, even in summer), your skin barrier stays intact and doesn't dry out. All lotions absorb best if you apply them when your skin is still damp after a shower or bath. And don't forget feet (especially heels) and elbows.

Liquid and bar cleansers do the same job: They remove dirt from your skin. Regardless, the only places you really should wash every day are your underarms and groin. Your skin naturally has proteins (which hold water) and lipids (to seal in moisture) -- if you remove those daily, you dry out your skin. Frequently replace sponges or brushes (about once a month) to prevent bacteria buildup.

Dehydration shows up in the skin as a loss of elasticity, so it's good to stay hydrated, but tea, juice, and even fruit count toward that total.

Smoking makes your skin look older and contributes to wrinkles. Smoking narrows the tiny blood vessels in the outermost layers of skin, which decreases blood flow. This depletes the skin of oxygen and nutrients, such as vitamin A, that are important to skin health. Smoking also damages collagen and elastin — fibers that give your skin its strength and elasticity. In addition, the repetitive facial expressions you make when smoking — such as pursing your lips when inhaling and squinting your eyes to keep out smoke — may contribute to wrinkles.
